SUMMARY:Sylvania Wilderness Backcountry Ski Outing
DESCRIPTION:Sylvania Wilderness\, an 18\,327-acre gem located just across the border of Wisconsin in the UP of Michigan\, is home to one of the largest stands of old growth forests in the upper Midwest. \n\n\n\nExplore this tranquil wilderness via backcountry skiing to Deer Island Lake\, one of the 34 named lakes in this glaciated landscape. Local naturalist Troy Walters will guide this 6-mile round trip ski from the southeast access point just over the Wisconsin border and head northwest on an ungroomed surface to Deer Island Lake. Along the way\, we will discuss the history of the area and how it was able to escape the widespread logging that took place in nearly all of the Northwoods. Exploring the definition of wilderness\, examining animals tracks and signs\, and experiencing a designed wilderness are highlights of this remote and peaceful backcountry skiing trip! Note: This path is often skied\, so backcountry skis are not a necessity. There are a few rolling hills and the distance is such that some previous ski experience is necessary.\n\n\n\nTroy Walters\n\nNoon to 3 pm\n\nFriday\, February 18\n\nMeet at the end of Fisher Rd (46 .167081\, -89 .229897)\n\n\n\n$35\n\n\n\nActivity Rating: 2-3 Slightly strenuous\, requires some endurance.\n\n\n\nTo register for any class\, visit nicoletcollege.edu/outdooradventure or call the\n\ncollege at 715 365-4544.
